Innovative Community Outreach Programme Triumphs – MEGA SULAM KPPIM Closes on a High Note

Shah Alam, 6 January 2023 – Masjid As-Solihin, Kampung Padang Jawa, witnessed the gathering of community and stakeholders in jubilation as the closing ceremony of the innovative community outreach program – MEGA SULAM KPPIM unfolded. A pride of UiTM product, MEGA SULAM KPPIM manifests the collaborative partnership from the school community and mosque congregation together with the dedicated final year undergraduates from the College of Computing, Informatics and Mathematics (KPPIM). Bearing fruit from the auspices of “Service Learning Malaysia – University for Society” (SULAM), the execution of the program marks a significant milestone in the journey towards a better and technologically empowered community.

The final year students from various computing sciences and information science programmes, served as program organizers, executors, and facilitators where they demonstrated a remarkable fusion of technology and knowledge into solutions that put the needs of the community at the forefront. Their commitment to human-centric solutions that addresses real-life challenges was evident in initiatives to embed cutting edge technology and ideas in promoting the materialisation of Smart Village. The audience was captivated by the successful implementation of these smart technologies, which have revolutionized family routines, education, mosque activities, disaster management, and efficient gardening practices in the village.

The event also took attendees on an exhilarating journey into the future, unveiling potential technologies that could shape a Cognitive City, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals. The undergraduates demonstrated visionary ideas on new means of trading and commerce, circular economy of plant waste, wellness meal, and transparent land and water resource management.

MEGA SULAM KPPIM was more than technological advancements; it also placed strong emphasis on education through upskilling and awareness programs catering to school children and university students alike. From computer workshops, skill practicums, seminars and even explorace, the community outreach program aimed to equip the younger generation with the skills necessary for the future whilst keeping mindful on cyber menaces. Heritage preservation was also on the cards as initiatives were made to capture the wisdom and historical stories of veteran generations of the community.

As the closing ceremony unfolded, the atmosphere was charged with enthusiasm. Tn Soleh Ahmad, Nazir for As-Solihin Mosque acknowledged the positive impact brought forth by the MEGA SULAM initiative to the community. He particularly noted on the immediate benefit gained upon the program kick off on 16th December 2023 as the solution provided were practical and relevant to the existing needs of the community.

Professor Ts. Dr Wan Abdul Rahim Wan Mohd Isa, Dean Academic and International KPPIM acknowledged the huge contribution played by the undergraduates and lecturers in producing sustainable and impactful product. He further added “I have high hopes for the partnership to grow further where we will continue to work together for the betterment of the community and produce highly innovative and empathic students to the real needs and challenges of the community”.

Mr. Mohd Salahuddin Nayan, Headmaster for Sekolah Kebangsaan Padang Jawa (Padang Jawa Primary School) and Mr. Haji Hisham Parman, Madani Community Chairman, were also in attendance where they were both exhilarated by the commitment and enthusiasm brought forth by the undergraduates.

KPPIM SULAM 2023/2024 programme is one of the initiatives aimed at empowering and serving the community through volunteer activities. Undergraduates are given the opportunity to apply their knowledge practically and discover how the knowledge they have acquired can also improve the living standards of the local community. The activities also support the aspirations of Fourth, Eleventh and Seventeenth Sustainable Development Goals, which are Quality Education, Sustainable Cities and Communities as well as Partnership for the Goals. It is also in line with the visions of Malaysia Madani.
