UiTM Sparks Young Minds on the Wonders of Computing

Shah Alam, 4 December 2023 – Sekolah Kebangsaan Padang Jawa, Shah Alam was buzzing with excitement thanks to the aspiring initiative led by final year students from the College of Computing, Informatics, and Mathematics (KPPIM)  Universiti Teknologi MARA Shah Alam. The event was part of the  Service Learning Malaysia – University for Society (SULAM) initiative.

The event which was under the purview of Ms Wan Athirah Wan Endut and Dr Jasber Gian Singh, exemplified a collaborative undertaking, involving over 50 computing sciences undergraduates as well as almost 300 upper primary students from SK Padang Jawa. The session began with a talk on combating cyberbullying entitled “Katakan Tidak Kepada Buli Siber!” followed by a thought-provoking discussion on “Ethics in Social Media”. The program then shifted to a cyber multimedia workshop for Year 5 students, where they explored Canva’s features, experimenting with fonts and colours for creative content. These sessions, held in the school’s musolla, nurtured a meaningful dialogue and garnered positive feedback from teachers. En  Muhammad Amirul Syahid, a teacher from SK Padang Jawa emphasized the importance of such talks, as it enhances students with digital skills. 

 

Realising the importance of coding skills in the progressive digital era, a Python workshop as well as an IoT project demonstrations were held which further enriched the pupils’ learning experience. An exhibition displaying innovative undergraduate projects from KPPIM was also held at the school’s Laman Seri Bestari. The exhibition served as a hub for exploring the wonders of computing, attracting both students and teachers alike. Mr. Mohd Salahuddin bin Nayan, SK Padang Jawa Headmaster highly endorsed  UiTM’s effort  for the educational initiatives.

KPPIM SULAM 2023/2024 programme is one of the initiatives aimed at empowering and serving the community through volunteer activities. Undergraduates are given the opportunity to apply their knowledge practically and discover how the knowledge they have acquired can also improve the living standards of the local community. The activities also support the aspirations of Fourth and Eleventh Sustainable Development Goals, which are Quality Education and Sustainable Cities and Communities. It is also in line with the visions of Malaysia Madani.
