Connecting Communities: Building Smart Village at Kampung Padang Jawa

Shah Alam, 16 December 2023 – Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam, through the College of Computing, Informatics and Mathematics (KPPIM) has successfully completed the Padang Jawa Smart Village Project program at Masjid As-Solihin, Kampung Padang Jawa. This program is part of the Service-Learning Malaysia – University for Society Program (SULAM) which involved 100 participants including undergraduates from the Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons. ) Computer Networks (CS255) in an effort to improve the infrastructure of the mosque.

The atmosphere in Kampung Padang Jawa has been positively charged as the community embraces this initiative, viewing it as a catalyst for long-lasting change. The collaborative efforts of residents, inspired by the leadership from the mosque community, Mr. Soleh Bin Ahmad and Mr. Haji Hisham bin Parman, marks a turning point in the community’s trajectory.

In enabling effective infrastructure improvement within the mosque compound, a group of students together with Dr. Nor Diana binti Ahmad engaged with the mosque representatives. This has resulted in creating official social media accounts for better information dissemination to the congregation, better complaint management system using QR-Code technology as well as better live video streaming by using Facebook and YouTube live streaming facilities.

Many successes were achieved on the program execution day. Mr. Mohd Husni M.A Halim, representative from Masjid As-Solihin was provided with hands-on training on using Prism application for the purpose of live streaming at the mosque. The use of live streaming is essential to directly give daily religious reminders (tazkirah) to the villagers. He was also trained on QR Code facilities in updating mosque related information for better distribution to the villagers.

Post training, Mr. Mohd Husni was elated. He said, “The use of modern technology is a very important exposure to the residents to facilitate communication with each other and preserve the well-being of the mosque and the community”. He was also impressed by the involvement of undergraduates and the village community in learning about technology throughout the program. This program has indeed ignited the hearts of the residents to continue to explore modern technologies as a bridge between the community and the mosque.

KPPIM SULAM 2023/2024 programme is one of the initiatives aimed at empowering and serving the community through volunteer activities. Undergraduates are given the opportunity to apply their knowledge practically and discover how the knowledge they have acquired can also improve the living standards of the local community. The activities also support the aspirations of Fourth, and Eleventh Sustainable Development Goals, which are Quality Education, as well as Sustainable Cities and Communities. It is also in line with the visions of Malaysia Madani.
