UiTM Students Grab First Prize in the AI Recognition and Ranging Track, the 4th DoubleQ Robot Development Competition (Spring Competition)

Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) is proud to announce that a team of four students from the Bachelor of Information Systems (Intelligent Systems Engineering), College of Computing, Informatics and Media (PrIMe) has won first prize in the 4th DoubleQ Robot Development Competition (Spring Competition) under the AI Recognition and Ranging Track. The students are Iman Shafiq bin Zulkifli, Zubli Quzaini Bin Zubli, Muhammad Haikhqal Bin Nasrat Taliff and Muhammad Hakim bin Mohammad Fadzli and being mentored by Dr Azliza Mohd Ali.

The international competition was held from early May till August 2022 with participation from esteemed universities such as the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Cambodia’s National University of Battambang, and Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City University of Science and Technology Education. The DoubleQ Robotics Development Competition is held once a year, and is divided into two stages: the spring competition and the autumn competition. Participants needed to complete two challenges (Human Detection and Binocular Ranging) using the binocular camera and AI Development Board provided by the organiser. “We applied YOLO v3 using Python programming for the Human Detection challenge”, said the team leader, Zubli Quzaini. In addition, the team developed a depth estimation system for the Binocular Ranging challenge that detects a person’s depth from the camera. The depth estimation program uses two cameras to simulate human eyes, and UiTM’ team applied a mathematical formula to calculate the distance of a person from the camera. The program was developed using C++ for its speed to ensure a smooth running program on the AI Board.

The experience gained from the competition were priceless as it involved applying state-of-the-art technology in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data, including the AI Development Board. The team believed that the competition is a starting point for them to further explore the potential of AI, machine learning, and deep learning to achieve a better sustainability as well as improving human life efficiency.

The 4th DoubleQ Robot Development Competition (Spring Competition) was successfully concluded with a total of 162 participations from local and overseas academic institutions. The competition was sponsored and co-organized by Guilin University of Electronic Science and Technology and Shanghai Dafuqiu Information Technology Co., Ltd., Ziguang Zhanrui, STMicroelectronics, Imagination, Chuangxin Huilian, Semtech, Guodian NARI, PNI, Hongpu Information, Lingming Photonics, and Niu Semiconductor and other well-known companies in China.
