SHAH ALAM, 20th June 2023 – On 16th June 2023 at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sek 7 Shah Alam a series of engaging activities under the theme “Stop! Check! Go! with PERKESO” were conducted under the program called Program Civil Engineering – Learn and Apply (CeLEAP) organized by School of Civil Engineering students, UiTM Shah Alam. This initiative aimed to raise awareness about road safety among students and promote responsible behavior on the road. The event was organized in collaboration with PERKESO (Social Security Organization) and featured informative sessions and interactive demonstrations.

Activity 1: Motorcycle Safety Demonstration

During this session, 23 Form 5 students who ride or ride as passengers on motorcycles participated in a demonstration. They were educated about essential motorcycle components that require regular maintenance, such as tires, brakes, signal lights, headlights, and brake lights. Moreover, they learned the proper ways to inspect their motorcycles for safety and were educated on the differences between standard and modified motorcycles. Additionally, crucial tips for safe motorcycle riding and pillion riding were shared.

Activity 2: Road Safety Talk

During this informative session, participants received a comprehensive briefing on factors contributing to road accidents and the potential consequences of not adhering to traffic signals and signs. They were enlightened about safe speed limits applicable in various areas, such as school zones and intersections. Furthermore, participants gained insights into the significance of tire markings and the importance of maintaining proper tire conditions. The session also covered motorcycle accidents occurring both locally and globally. The aim was to educate students about the factors influencing road accidents, including human, environmental, and vehicular factors.

Activity 3: Know Your Signals and Safety on the Road

This session focused on equipping participants with knowledge about road furniture and safety measures. It included explanations on steering wheel handling techniques and the importance of proper hand placement while driving. Participants also learned about different types of vehicle tires and the significance of choosing the right helmet for personal safety. To conclude the activity, a road safety and road furniture quiz was conducted to assess participants’ understanding and knowledge.
