“Empowering the Community: College of Engineering’s SULAM Program Implements 360 Waste Solution in Bukit Rambai, Melaka”

MELAKA, 20th June 2023 – In collaboration with SWM Environment Sdn Bhd and the Taman Bukit Rambai Residents’ Association (KRT), a group of 30 final-year students and six lecturers from the College of Engineering, UiTM Shah Alam organized an awareness program on effective solid waste management. The program took place on 10 June 2023, at the SRS Cabin in Taman Bukit Rambai, Melaka, and was led by advisors Ir. Dr. Nur Syahiza Zainuddin, Dr. Marfiah Ab. Wahid, Ts. Dr. Irma Noorazurah Mohamad, Ts. Nurhidayah Hamzah, PM Ts. Dr. Mazidah Mukri, and Ts. Dr. Nor Hazwani Md Zain.

Under the direction of Program Director Cik Nur Farah Aini Ahmad Kamel, the program allowed students to interact directly with residents of Taman Bukit Rambai. It included community service and knowledge exchange. In addition to meeting the requirements of the ECC589 Engineers in Society course, the program focused on improving the well-being and education of Taman Bukit Rambai residents.

Datuk Lim Ban Hong, Klebang State Assemblyman, officiated the opening ceremony and planted a symbolic tree. The Corporate General Manager of SWM Environment, Mohd Norlisam Mohd Nordin, was also present, as was the Dean of Research and Innovation of the College of Engineering, UiTM Shah Alam, Professor Ts Dr Aidah Jumahat, the Chairman of Taman Bukit Rambai Residents’ Association, En. Ahmad Nor Iman Shawal, representatives from Kg. Bukit Rambai, and the Secretary of JPKK, En. Mohd Zaki Sulaiman.

Various engaging activities were held throughout the program, including WasteRanger, Trash to Treasure, and Button On! WastEd! Repurpose Your Leftovers, Turn Waste Into Wealth, and Hydroponic Arc: The Future of Farming are all topics covered in the present program. These activities aimed to promote environmentally sound solid waste management practices.

The program was also in line with the SDGs, specifically SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable Communities and Cities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). It is hoped that this program will raise awareness and encourage all community members, regardless of background or age, to change household waste management practices and reduce waste sent to landfills.
