Service Learning Malaysia – University for Society (SULAM): International Webinar – IT Ethical Issues: Perspective and Reality

Under the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) in Malaysia, the Service Learning Malaysia – University for Society (SULAM) initiative aims to combine education objectives with community service. The initiative’s goal is to provide students with a learning experience that connects theory with practice and provides opportunities for students to contribute their knowledge, skills, and expertise in solving community problems or issues.

On January 7th, 2023, the Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons.) Netcentric Computing (CS251) students through the NETCOM CLUB, College of Computing, Informatics and Media, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia held the SULAM initiative for the course Ethical, Social, and Professional Issues in ICT (ICT652). The program was directed by Mr. Muhammad Zul Akmal Shafiee, with the project theme for the ICT652 course being “International Webinar – IT Ethical Issues: Perspective and Reality.” The program, under the supervision of Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Wan Abdul Rahim Wan Mohd Isa, the program advisor, took place on January 7th at 9:30 a.m. IST and 12 p.m. MYT.

Dr. M. Rajkumar, the principal of JP College of Engineering in Tamil Nadu, India, ensured strong participation from students and lecturers with 69 individuals joining the program virtually via Microsoft Teams. Furthermore, 50 students from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Cawangan Kedah, Kampus Sungai Petani, Merbok, Kedah, Malaysia viewed the program through a live Youtube stream, bringing the overall participant count to 119.

Ms. Aina Nazahah Mohd Nor was the MC of the program. The opening remark was given by Dr. Anuar Ali, the Head of Leadership and Student Development, College of Computing, Informatics and Media, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia. This was followed by speakers from ICT652 students: (i) Mr. Zul Hilmi Mazlan on “International Intellectual Property Issues,” (ii) Ms. Hazwani Hamdan on “Social Media Ethical Issues,” and (iii) Mr. Muhammad Syahreel Abdul Aziz on “Plagiarism Issues.” Participants engaged with the speakers during the Q&A sessions. The closing remark was given by Dr. Mohsen Mohamad Hata, Advisor of NETCOM CLUB, College of Computing, Informatics and Media, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia.
