An Inter- Group Public Speaking Competition was held on 2nd December 2022 among representatives of each ELC590 (English for Oral Presentations) group.
The objectives of the programme are to help students to come out from their comfort zone, to train participants on how to face fear of public speaking and to enhance the art of presentation skills. The preparation of the event started around 7.30 AM with the help of Mr. Hisham, the Technical Assistant. As the registration of the participants and breakfast were ongoing, as an opening performance of the event, the special performer, Ms. Angelyca Laura Lee Shuen Yee serenaded with some intersting her songs. After that, Ms. Delia Olaybal, the advisor for this event, gave a wonderful opening speech to everyone especially the participants.
Then, the Public Speaking Competition officially started after the reading of the rules of thecompetition by Mdm Edwina Ivy Athonius, the Emcee of the event. The esteemed judges were Associate Professor Christina Chin, Dr. Jocelyn Lee Yee Vun and Mdm Lindey Easter Apolinius underthe chief judge, Associate Professor Jasman Jaafar. The participants’ topics were quite intriguing such as ‘Who should do household chores? Men or Women’, ‘The Bermuda Triangle’ and ‘Zaha Hadid – The Most Extraordinary Architect of Her Time.’
The participants for this event were Ms. Eva Ann Shylla Jarin, Mr. Awang Ahmad Fitrie Azizie bin Jasmin, Ms. Nur Azimah Binti Joharin, Ms. Julia Abdullah, Ms. Dania Binti Jeddy, Ms. Farah Arisha Binti Rosdi, Ms. Lyeandrey Jouraine Leo, Ms. Azizah binti Munding, Mr. Abner Ishak Josely and Ms.Farra Jasmin binti Matsin.
As all the participants ended their speech and the chief judges and the judges started their evaluative discussion, the special performer entertained everyone by singing a number of requested songs from the audience. Then, when the judges finished their discussion, the Certificates of participation were given to all the participants that includes the special performer and E-Certificates for all the judges were presented by Ms. Delia Olaybal as a token of appreciation for each and every one of them.
The certificates were eloquently isued by Ms. Delia Olaybal and Ms. Sazirah Jaafar. Finally, the event climaxed to the announcement of the winners. Ms. Julia Abdullah emerged victorious in winning 1st while Mr. Abner Ishak Josely swiftly took 2nd place and 3rd place went to Ms. Dania Binti Jeddy. In addition, Ms.Nur Azimah Binti Joharin caught the attention of the judges and won The Special Jury Award. The prizes money were handled by Mdm Aries Henry Joseph.
After the prize giving ceremony, Mr. Joseph A. Alagiaraj T. Raj did the closing remarks for this event and even invited the chief judge, Associate Professor Jasman Jaafar to give some pointers on Public Speaking. As the event reached to an end, a photo taking session was done for all who were present on that day by Mdm Jenna Desiree Robert.
