PERMATANG PAUH, PULAU PINANG, March 10, 2025 – Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Pulau Pinang Branch, Permatang Pauh Campus, in collaboration with UiTM Shah Alam Campus and the Sabah State Education Department (JPN Sabah), successfully hosted an online webinar, “Calculus as the Language of Teaching: Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice,” on January 10, 2025.
The webinar, aimed at undergraduate engineering students enrolled in MAT455 (Further Calculus for Engineers), attracted 80 participants from various engineering faculties.
Mr. Ahmad Fadzlan Mohamed Shahiri, a mechanical engineer from JPN Sabah and UiTM alumnus, served as the keynote speaker. He shared his extensive experience from previous roles at the Public Works Department (JKR) Kuala Lumpur and JPN Sabah, highlighting the practical applications of calculus in major projects.
“Mr. Ahmad Fadzlan’s experience in projects like the development of a mineral and geoscience collection storage center and the renovation of the ASWARA building underscored the importance of calculus in real-world engineering,” said a UiTM representative.
The webinar was structured into three segments: an introduction to the speaker’s background, a technical discussion on calculus applications in mechanical engineering, and an interactive Q&A session.
Participants found the one-hour and forty-five-minute session highly valuable, expressing appreciation for the opportunity to connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications.
“The students gained deeper insights into the role of calculus in engineering practice and research,” said a UiTM spokesperson.
This initiative aligns with UiTM CIDL Collaborative Teaching’s objectives, emphasizing the university’s commitment to producing competent engineering graduates.
