“SCE Empowers Secondary School Students with the Thrilling Bridge Battle Competition and Knowledge Sharing Activities”

SHAH ALAM, 8th June 2023 – Program Civil Engineering – Learn & Apply (CeLEAP), featured the team organizing the bridge battle competition and five other groups showcasing their activities in various engineering-related fields. These fields included Engineering with Purpose, From Pollution to Solution, Stop! Check! Go! with PERKESO, Wear It Right!, Clean & Clear: A Quiz on Tap Water, Chlorine & Filters, and From Powder to Pillar: A Chic Method for Creating Concrete Specimens. These groups actively engaged with secondary school students from SMK Seksyen 7, providing them with valuable insights and practical knowledge.

This event was organized by final-year students of the Bachelor of Civil Engineering program at the School of Civil Engineering (SCE), College of Engineering, UiTM Shah Alam, which is required for the subject Engineering in Society (EIS). This event gave students valuable hands-on experiences and opportunities to learn from industry professionals. These students from Form 4 belong to the technical science stream. This program is also in collaboration with various partners from the industry, including Ts. Ainarull Assikin Abdul Hadi from Consolidated Legend Sdn Bhd and Mr. Mohd On bin Basiran from Jurutera Perunding Sdn Bhd served as judges for the bridge competition event. Additionally, Mr. Hj Jamil Bakri from Yayasan Makmum provided generous sponsorship. It is noteworthy that all three collaborators are esteemed alumni of UiTM.

Ts Dr. Yazmin Sahol Hamid, a senior lecturer from the College of Engineering and the program advisor, gave a briefing session to familiarize themselves with the requirements of the bridge competition. The students were given two hours to prepare their bridge model. The session was followed by presentations where students explained their design choices and construction techniques. Subsequently, the bridges underwent rigorous load testing to determine their strength and durability. The event concluded with an eagerly anticipated prize presentation ceremony, acknowledging the students’ remarkable achievements.

Meanwhile, in the afternoon, students from the SCE organized the “Bridge Across the Globe Booth for students from forms 1 and 2. The booth was an interactive platform to educate students in grades 1 and 2 about the world of bridges. This program received sponsors from Nazrine Maju, Pusaka Runding Sdn Bhd, and Kia Ace Development.

During this activity, school students had the opportunity to explore various aspects of bridges through engaging discussions and informative presentations. They also participated in a survey, providing valuable feedback on their perception of bridges. Students were invited to try the Bridge Simulator game to enhance their understanding further, which challenged their engineering knowledge and problem-solving abilities. A Spin the Wheel session was also conducted, adding an element of excitement and encouraging active participation.

These activities not only exposed students to the practical aspects of bridge construction but also aimed to inspire them to pursue engineering as a potential career path. By providing hands-on experiences, students from the SCE and its collaborators played a vital role in expanding the students’ from SMK Seksyen 7 horizons and promoting a passion for engineering.

By organizing such engaging activities, SCE continues to empower school students with the necessary knowledge and skills to excel in engineering. With these initiatives, SCE reaffirms its commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and learning, nurturing the engineers of tomorrow who will shape the future of our nation’s infrastructure.
