Unlocking the Intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Islamic Ethics: A Dynamic Event at KPPIM

On December 5th, College of Computing, Informatics and Mathematics (KPPIM),  Universiti Teknologi MARA (KPPIM) hosted the captivating symposium, “Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Islam.” KPPIM partnered with Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM) for this thought-provoking event. The event aimed to explore the moral dimensions of AI in the framework of Islamic perspectives, highlighting the harmonious integration of technological progress and ethical values. The symposium started with an opening speech from Professor Ts Dr Noorman Masrek, Dean of Research and Innovation at KPPIM. Next, Professor Dhiya Al-Jumeily, a prominent figure from the University of Liverpool John Moores, graced the stage with an insightful presentation title “AI in Islam.

The core of the event centered around a lively forum entitled “Ethical Implications of Artificial Intelligence in Societies: Balancing Technological Advancements with Moral Values from Islamic Perspectives.” The forum, skilfully moderated by Ts. Tengku Azrul Tengku Azhar, Director of Regulatory Facilitation at the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), brought together industry experts and thought leaders. Among the esteemed panelists were Professor Dhiya Al-Jumeily, renowned for his pioneering work in the intersection of AI and ethics, and Dr Shaikh Mohd Saifudeen Shaikh Mohd Salleh, the esteemed Principal Fellow and Director of Research Management at the Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia. With each panelist offering a unique perspective, the forum was a kaleidoscope of diverse insights, delving into the complex relationship between technology and morality.

 

The forum was an engaging and lively event, spanning an hour in total. Afterward, a dynamic 30-minute Q&A session ensued, with the audience eagerly participating, seeking clarification and delving deeper into the topics at hand. The attendance of 314 individuals added an invigorating energy to the program, underscoring the strong interest in the convergence of AI and Islamic ethics. For those who could not attend in person, KPPIM made sure the event was accessible to a wider audience by live-streaming it on YouTube. The success of this effort was evident as an impressive 340 views were logged via YouTube Live, extending the reach of the discussions well beyond the physical confines of the venue.

The “Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Islam” event at KPPIM proved to be a significant milestone in fostering dialogue and understanding at the crossroads of technology and ethics. By bringing together scholars, experts, and a diverse audience, the event showcased the commitment of KPPIM and IKIM to explore the ethical implications of AI through the lens of Islamic values, paving the way for further exploration and collaboration in this critical field.
