From 1st September 2023 to 30th November 2023, two students from School of Mechanical Engineering, College of Engineering, Universiti Teknologi MARA went to Germany for On-job-training Internship at the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechatronics System (IEM) in Paderborn. Both students, Abdul Mujeeb bin Sohpian and Muhamad Iqmal bin Lokman are in their final year study for Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Mechanical (EM220).
This program is providing them the chance to learn about Germany industries and cutting-edge science and technology. It is also a part of the activities under the Memorandum of Understandings (MOU) between Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and Fraunhofer IEM.
On-the-job training (OJT) internships for engineering students is to provide them with practical, hands-on experience in a real-world engineering environment. This serves several purposes, such as skill development where it allows students to apply theoretical knowledge gained in classrooms to real projects, helping them develop practical skills relevant to their field of study. OJT also giving opportunity of exposure to industry practices related to actual practices, methodologies, and technologies used in the engineering industry, bridging the gap between academic learning and professional application. Students also engaging in real projects to critical thinking, problem solving skills, and make decisions in a real-world context, which is often different from classroom scenarios.
Overall, the objective of an OJT internship for engineering students is to enrich their education with practical experience, preparing them for a successful transition into the professional world of engineering. The opportunity will also be helping them building their resume and increased employability. Both students are involving in Fast Gate Project (Autonomous Airport Operation) under the supervision of Dr Yee Jingye. The project focuses on mapping the entire value chain from development to validation, optimising the overall system. This will help improvise decarbonisation in civil aviation industries.
