PETALING JAYA, 20th June 2023 – In a concerted effort to promote a green and sustainable environment, students from School of Civil Engineering (SCE) Universiti Teknologi MARA, UiTM Shah Alam organized a series of impactful activities under the theme “Guardian Against Garbage.” The event was part of the Service Learning Malaysia – University for Society (SULAM) program and was held at the Pusat Informasi Sungai Penchala in Petaling Jaya.
The students aimed to raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation and to foster creative waste management solutions in collaboration with Forum Air Kita, a prominent environmental organization. The event was a resounding success thanks to the support of Forum Air Kita, as well as Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Air Negara (SPAN) and Jabatan Pengairan dan Saliran Negeri Selangor (JPS).
This event was made possible with the generous sponsorship of EcoKnights, a leading non-governmental environmental organization established in 2005. EcoKnights is dedicated to empowering sustainable living and taking action towards creating a better planet. Their sponsorship of the “Guardian Against Garbage” event demonstrates their commitment to supporting initiatives that promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices.
The student group, comprised of Donald Marius, Wexloney Andrew K Gimbang, Muhammad Farisalimin bin Mat Rani, Muhamad Hafizi Bin Hamzah, and Muhammad Yuszairee Nabiq Bin Mohd Yusuff, organized a variety of informative activities that engaged participants with simple demonstrations under the supervision of their advisor, Ir. Ts. Noorfaizah Binti Hamzah.
The program showcased a variety of engaging activities organized by the team, including the Seedball Workshop and Ecobrick Project. Additionally, other teams took part in projects focused on River Monitoring, River Care, and the Water Filter Race.
Seedball Workshop:
In our recent workshop, we shared the wonders of seedballs! These small balls, made of a mixture of soil, compost, and plant seeds, are an innovative way to support seed germination and early plant growth. We demonstrated the simple process of making seedballs using 2 cups of soil, 1 cup of compost, and 3 sunflower seeds. The participants had a blast throwing the seedballs into selected areas, easily distributing them over a large area. Join us in promoting greenery with this effective and eco-friendly seed planting method!
Ecobrick Project:
Our ecobrick project showcased the power of creative solutions to tackle plastic waste. By tightly packing used plastic waste into plastic bottles, we reduce the volume of plastic waste and create a sustainable solution. The collected plastic waste from Kolej Teratai at UiTM Shah Alam was transformed into various creative designs, including stools, chairs, and tables. This eye-opening activity raised awareness about eco-friendly ways to handle plastic waste. Let’s embrace this durable and long-lasting alternative and make a positive impact on our environment!
The diverse range of activities offered during the program provided a comprehensive understanding of environmental conservation and sustainable practices. Through these hands-on projects, participants gained valuable knowledge and practical skills, empowering them to become active contributors to a greener and more sustainable future.
