“College of Engineering UiTM’s International SULAM Program Empowers Sustainability: Purifying Water at Masjid Nurul Jannah, Indonesia”

INDONESIA, 20th June 2023 – On 3rd June 2023, an international SULAM program titled “Harnessing Sustainability Towards Engineering Technology” was held in Pekanbaru, Indonesia. To address a critical water purification challenge, the program brought together students and lecturers from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and Sekolah Tinggi Teknologi Pekanbaru. This collaborative initiative, sponsored by Yayasan Vfive and supported by Harista Karsa Mandiri, aimed to install a water filter system at Masjid Nurul Jannah to improve the quality of water used for ablution and other daily purposes.

The program, organized by UiTM’s College of Engineering, included 20 students and 5 lecturers, including 9 UiTM students and 1 lecturer, as well as 11 students and 4 lecturers from Sekolah Tinggi Teknologi Pekanbaru. The program was also supported by SMFFKA UiTM Shah Alam. The use of underground water at Masjid Nurul Jannah has resulted in cloudy water with an unpleasant odor. As a result, the primary goal of this program was to install a water filter system that effectively purifies the water, ensuring clean and odorless water for the mosque’s daily use.

The “Harnessing Sustainability Towards Engineering Technology” program achieved significant milestones in various areas. Academically, students benefited from the knowledge exchange and transfer sessions, enabling them to explore innovative solutions for clean water. The program also fostered social collaboration by establishing strong relationships between UiTM and STTP students, promoting a culture of collaboration and sustainable engineering practices. Moreover, the program had a positive community impact as students directly engaged with local residents, addressing water quality concerns and contributing to their overall well-being. These accomplishments demonstrate the program’s commitment to academic excellence, social cohesion, and community empowerment.

The successful implementation of the “Harnessing Sustainability Towards Engineering Technology” program showcases the College of Engineering’s dedication to promoting sustainable practices and addressing real-world challenges. By purifying the water at Masjid Nurul Jannah, this international SULAM program exemplifies the importance of providing clean water and encourages other industries to adopt effective air filtration systems.
