Exploring Global Health Perspectives: Erasmus Medical Students Dive into Malaysian Rehabilitation Programs

On November 1, 2023, the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Hospital Al-Sultan Abdullah orchestrated an enlightening visit to the National Stroke Association of Malaysia (NASAM). This initiative, under the Erasmus Minor Global Health Program, sought to immerse seven third-year medical students from Erasmus Medical School, Rotterdam, in Malaysia’s community rehabilitation ecosystem.

NASAM, celebrated for its trailblazing efforts in offering comprehensive community-based rehabilitation for stroke survivors, served as an epitome of Malaysia’s dedication to its stroke-afflicted citizens. The excursion aimed to enrich the students and seven accompanying rehabilitation staff from Hospital Al-Sultan Abdullah with an understanding of NASAM’s laudable contributions. Furthermore, the visit illuminated the contrasts between Malaysian and Dutch approaches to stroke rehabilitation while simultaneously marking World Stroke Day, observed on October 29th.

Guided by Madam Nancy Yap, NASAM’s Administrative and Event Executive, the day unfolded with an engaging group therapy session for high-functioning stroke survivors. Spanning two hours, the vibrant session was laden with invigorating aerobic exercises, melding health and enjoyment seamlessly. Subsequently, attention shifted to group therapy for those necessitating walking aids and assistance and personalized therapy sessions for those needing intensive therapy.

The journey through NASAM’s history, dating back to 1996, offered invaluable insights into its evolution and triumphs. A dynamic Q&A session with Ms. N. Nagasundari, a seasoned physiotherapist with 13 years of experience at NASAM, facilitated a lively exchange of knowledge. Participants were also gifted informational handouts and brochures as mementoes.

Concluding with a heartfelt photo session at NASAM’s entrance, the visit aspired to leave a lasting impact on the Erasmus students. It is our hope that this experience not only broadened their understanding of community rehabilitation but also instilled a sense of inspiration derived from NASAM’s persistent endeavours.

Happy World Stroke Day 2023! Together, We Are #GreaterThanStroke!
