The International Day of Mathematics (IDM) took place at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) on the 14th March 2023. Organised by the College of Computing, Informatics and Media, (KPPIM), UiTM, this annual celebration coincides with the digits of the mathematical constant π (Pi), 3.14. The International Day of Mathematics has been recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on November 26th, 2019 where the first documented celebration took place at the San Francisco Exploratorium by Physicist Larry Shaw, in 1988.
With the theme “Mathematics for Everyone”, UiTM in collaboration with the Malaysian Mathematical Sciences Association (PERSAMA) has organised various interesting activities from 6 to 14 March 2023. Among them, an online Olympiad competition which saw the participation of nearly 200 groups of students from local high school and institutions of higher learning.
Art Online competitions and Reels Challenge competitions were also held. With the themes “Geometric” and “A (Pi) π lover is a Pie Lover” respectively, participants of all ages submitted their works. UiTM IDM 2023 also conducted a workshop entitled “Math Apps by Apple”. Sponsored by MyREN Sdn Bhd, the workshop aims to cultivate awareness and knowledge sharing on the use of mathematics in daily affairs and applications. The workshop speaker was Associate Professor Rahidzab Talib (an academic from College of Engineering, UiTM Shah Alam) who is a certified instructor and recognized by Maple.
On the main event of UiTM IDM 2023, a “Malaysian in Heritage” webinar session was conducted via hybrid mode, involving KPPIM smart room as well as Webex and YouTube online applications. This informative webinar session was delivered by Pn. Wan Norliza Wan Bakar of UiTM Machang and Pn. Suffina Long from UiTM Mukah. The webinar session ended with a “Malaysian Culture 101” video that introduced Malaysian culture to everyone. The event concluded with a closing ceremony which sees the presence of UiTM Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr Mohammad Hariri Abdullah and KPPIM Assistant Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ts Dr Haryani Haron.
