In an effort to enhance the learning experience for students with special needs, the School of Chemical Engineering at the College of Engineering recently organized a science learning activity at PPKI SMK Puncak Alam 3. The program, based on the concept of a “free market,” aimed to boost the enthusiasm of students from PPKI and foster a love for learning in the field of Science and Technology.
The event, organized by the Leadership and Professional Ethics for Engineers (CPE680) course at UiTM, brought together a total of 57 representatives from UiTM and 38 students from SMK Puncak Alam 3. The collaboration between UiTM and SMK Puncak Alam 3 was crucial in creating an inclusive and engaging learning environment for the students.
The science learning activity took place on June 6, 2023, at SMK Puncak Alam 3. The main objective of the program was to enhance the self-esteem and knowledge of the students through interactive science booths, where UiTM students enthusiastically shared their expertise and engaged with the secondary school students.
Throughout the event, the students from SMK Puncak Alam 3 had the opportunity to visit various science booths set up by the UiTM representatives. These booths featured a wide range of engaging experiments and demonstrations, designed to captivate the interest of the students and spark their curiosity in the Science and Technology fields.
The “free market” concept allowed the students to freely explore the different booths and interact with the UiTM representatives, fostering a sense of autonomy and empowerment. By actively participating in hands-on activities, the students not only gained valuable scientific knowledge but also developed crucial skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication.
The program received positive feedback from both the students and teachers at SMK Puncak Alam 3. It proved to be a remarkable opportunity for the students with special needs to experience science in a fun and interactive manner, instilling in them a passion for learning that will hopefully extend beyond the event itself.
The School of Chemical Engineering and UiTM’s initiative in organizing this program highlights their commitment to promoting inclusivity and providing equal learning opportunities for students with special needs. By bridging the gap between higher education and secondary schools, the program successfully encouraged the PPKI students to pursue Science and Technology fields with renewed enthusiasm.
This collaborative effort between UiTM and SMK Puncak Alam 3 serves as a testament to the power of education in transforming lives and fostering a love for learning. The success of this science learning activity sets a positive example for future initiatives aimed at empowering students with special needs and nurturing their academic and personal growth.
