7th of June, 2023 – Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) recently hosted a collaboration meeting with NXP Semiconductors, a leading global semiconductor manufacturer, in a significant step toward strengthening ties between academia and industry. The meeting, held on the 7th floor’s As Syafie Conference Room, aimed to investigate potential areas of collaboration between School of Electrical Engineering (PKE) and NXP Semiconductors.

The meeting, led by PM Ir Dr. Hasmaini Mohammad, Head of School of PKE, began with a warm welcome from the PKE management team to representatives from NXP Semiconductors. Dr. Hasmaini gave an overview of the history of UiTM as well as an introduction to the organizational structure of PKE and the Center for Industrial Collaboration and Networking (KPK).

This meeting was a continuation of previous meetings between UiTM and NXP Semiconductors. A virtual meeting was held first, followed by a visit to NXP Semiconductors’ facility in Petaling Jaya by the PKE team. The primary goal of this meeting was to strengthen relationships with the industry, with a focus on the following potential areas of collaboration:

1. Using NXP engineers’ expertise to teach specific topics in the Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology (SMT) curriculum.
2. Installation of a wire bonder machine by NXP in the NET laboratory for BTech students’ teaching and learning. This collaboration entails electronic lecturers and NXP engineers working together to develop subject codes and syllabus content.
3. Provision of funding for final-year projects (FYP) or postgraduate research projects with NXP-suggested project topics.

NXP management will evaluate the aforementioned options, and a response is expected by early August 2023. Following the meeting, the NXP representatives were taken to the NET laboratory to demonstrate the location and positioning of the wire bonder machine if option number 2 is selected.

Furthermore, NXP expressed a desire for additional engagement with PKE students by requesting several slots to introduce NXP and its industry expertise. At the meeting’s conclusion, UiTM expressed their hope that collaborations with esteemed industry partners such as NXP would be established, providing valuable exposure and opportunities for PKE students to excel.
The collaboration meeting between UiTM and NXP Semiconductors represents an important step forward in the industry-academia partnership. UiTM hopes to improve its students’ learning experiences and produce industry-ready graduates in the field of electrical engineering by leveraging NXP’s expertise and resources.
