Industry Lecture: AIoT Technology Application and Project Implementation

April 26, 2024 – The Industry Outreach Unit of PKE UiTM Penang hosted an insightful lecture on “AIoT Technology Application and Project Implementation” at Dewan Seminar Blok Perdana. The guest speaker, Ts. Dr. Mohd Ismifaizul from MIMOS Sdn. Bhd., shared his extensive knowledge and experience in the field of IoT and AIoT, offering valuable insights into the rapidly evolving landscape of smart technologies.

Ts. Dr. Mohd Ismifaizul holds a diploma and degree in Electrical Engineering from UiTM, graduating in 2002 and 2005, respectively. He later pursued his master’s and PhD at UTM, completing his studies in 2017 and 2022. His PhD research focused on a Hybrid Energy Harvester using Optimized Piezoelectric and Solar Power for a Self-Powered Global Positioning Tracking System.

Dr. Ismifaizul’s career began as an R&D Engineer specializing in microcontrollers, followed by a three-year tenure as an instructor at UniKL – British Malaysian Institute. He later worked as a Grant Research Assistant at UTM, contributing to the IC design of Positioning System Device Energy Harvesting Systems. From 2010 to early 2023, he served as an engineer in the government sector, focusing on the operation and development of surveillance systems for Polis Diraja Malaysia. Currently, Dr. Ismifaizul is a staff researcher at MIMOS Berhad in the Wireless Communication and Sensor Technology Department and has been a Freelance Technical Manager with HIS Global Service since 2015.

Key Lecture Highlights:

  1. Industrial Revolution and IoT: Ismifaizul began by discussing the Industrial Revolution’s role in shaping modern technology, emphasizing how the Internet of Things (IoT) is revolutionizing industries. He explained that IoT involves integrating the real and digital worlds through networked sensors, actuators, embedded hardware, and software, enabling objects to connect to the internet and interact seamlessly.

  1. IoT Applications: The lecture covered various IoT applications, including IoT-enabled factories, shops, airports, mobile devices, datacenters, homes, cities, and transportation systems. Dr. Ismifaizul highlighted how IoT is transforming industries by enabling smart environments that improve efficiency, safety, and user experience.

  1. Layers in IoT Systems: The speaker outlined the different layers of an IoT system, including the Application Layer, Middleware Layer, Network Layer, and Sensing Layer. Each layer plays a critical role in ensuring the smooth functioning of IoT systems, from data collection to processing and application.

  1. IoT Security Concerns: Ismifaizul addressed the growing concerns surrounding IoT security, citing research that shows a significant lack of consumer confidence in IoT device security. He discussed various types of IoT security attacks, including communication attacks, lifecycle attacks, and physical attacks, emphasizing the need for robust security measures to protect connected devices and networks.

  1. AIoT – The Convergence of AI and IoT: The lecture introduced the concept of AIoT, the fusion of AI and IoT to create intelligent systems capable of autonomous decision-making. Dr. Ismifaizul explained the evolution of AIoT, from siloed IoT systems focused on sensing and monitoring to fully autonomous AIoT ecosystems. He highlighted AIoT’s potential to transform industries by enabling smart factories, intelligent transportation systems, and enhanced security measures.

  1. Benefits and Applications of AIoT: Ismifaizul discussed the benefits of AIoT, such as decreasing costs of CPU, memory, and storage, the convergence of IT and operational technology, and the rise of big data and cloud computing. He also explored specific AIoT applications, including smart grid management, smart cities, smart healthcare, and smart agriculture.

  1. Generative AIoT Applications: The speaker introduced three generative AIoT applications: code generation for IoT, robot control, and social IoT devices. He provided examples of how AI can be used to create, complete, or combine IoT code, control IoT-connected robots, and enhance user-device interactions.

  1. The Rise of Industrial AI + AIoT: Ismifaizul concluded the lecture by discussing the rise of industrial AI and AIoT, driven by advancements in software tools, simplified AI solutions, and hardware improvements. He emphasized how AI is increasingly being infused into legacy applications and the growing availability of AI chips, enabling more efficient and powerful AIoT systems.
