Celebrating Merdeka: Traditional Games and Cultural Festivities Unite UiTM’s Academy of Language Studies in Promoting Health, Heritage, and Community

17 AUGUST 2024: Traditional games and Sukan Rakyat can build a smart community that practices a healthy lifestyle and is active in sports. Not only is it able to test thinking skills and promote social interaction, Sukan Rakyat is also good for body health. “Sukan Rakyat & Sambutan Merdeka Akademi Pengajian Bahasa” was held from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., offering a vibrant celebration that combined physical activities with cultural pride. The event featured a delightful theme of “Pakaian Kampung Melayu Zaman Dulu”, which encouraged all Akademi Pengajian Bahasa (APB) staff to dress in traditional Malay village attire.

The day was filled with an array of engaging games for both adults and children. For the adults, the games included tug of war, arranging bricks, blowing up a balloon in a cup, using chopsticks to pick up marbles, running in kain sarung, and coconut bowling. The tug of war, in particular, was a highlight, fostering a spirited atmosphere as staff members cheered and supported each other, exemplifying teamwork and camaraderie. The children enjoyed a series of fun and challenging games tailored to their age group, such as carrying a ping pong ball on a spoon, filling a bottle with water, and participating in coloring activity. These activities not only entertained the younger participants but also encouraged family involvement and interaction.

Meals were also provided throughout the event, ensuring that everyone could have a great time while socializing and reflecting on the day’s activities. The combination of physical challenges, cultural attire, and communal meals created a festive environment that enhanced bonding among staff and celebrated the spirit of Merdeka. 

The “Sukan Rakyat & Sambutan Merdeka Akademi Pengajian Bahasa” event exemplified UiTM’s core values by promoting a healthy lifestyle and celebrating Malaysian heritage. The event, featuring traditional games and a theme of traditional Malay village attire, emphasized cultural appreciation and community bonding. Activities like tug of war and family-friendly games fostered teamwork and interaction, aligning with UiTM’s commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment. The communal meals and festive atmosphere further strengthened relationships among staff, reflecting UiTM’s dedication to a holistic and engaging educational experience.

Overall, the “Sukan Rakyat & Sambutan Merdeka Akademi Pengajian Bahasa” was a huge success, fulfilling its objectives of enhancing team bonding and encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle in a fun and culturally rich setting.
