Seri Iskandar, 23 August 2024 – In a decisive move to safeguard the natural heritage at UiTM Perak, the university has successfully completed the physical tagging of the Dipterocarpus semivestitus or Keruing Padi trees, a critically endangered species, within the Seri Iskandar Campus on 22-23 August 2024. This initiative, encompassing the tagging of 20 trees across Forest 1 and Forest 2 areas, represents a significant collaborative effort among the Landscape Architecture lecturers, the Green Campus team, and the Auxiliary team (PB) of UiTM Perak. The project, led by Certified Arborist LAr Dr. Helmi Hamzah (CA), brought together their collective efforts to ensure the meticulous tagging and monitoring of these invaluable trees, reinforcing UiTM’s commitment to ecological preservation.

The Keruing Padi has been identified as a high-value forest species, making its preservation not just desirable but essential. The physical tagging conducted during this initiative is more than a routine task; it is a critical measure that allows for enhanced monitoring and management of these trees. In addition to the physical tagging, the visit also included a comprehensive, periodic assessment of the trees’ conditions. This monitoring process revealed both encouraging and concerning signs. On one hand, the discovery of new shoots indicated healthy growth, a positive sign that the trees are thriving in their environment. On the other hand, signs of decay were also identified, including the presence of fungus, termite activity, and other possible threats to the trees’ health. These findings underscore the urgent need for continuous and proactive management to prevent further degradation and ensure the long-term survival of these species.

By leveraging the tagging imperatives for Keruing Padi on campus, it aligns with the university’s strategic goals, including Performance Indicator (PI135), and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 13 and 15, which are focused on combating climate change and preserving terrestrial ecosystems. Therefore, the importance of this initiative should not be overstated, as it aligns with broader conservation efforts and reflects UiTM’s dedication to maintaining its natural resources. The preservation of natural treasures like the Keruing Padi is not just a responsibility but a necessity. Without collective awareness and action, the very ecosystems that sustain us could be at risk. This initiative serves as a crucial reminder that environmental conservation is not an option but an imperative for the survival of our planet and future generations.
