3 December 2023 – An environmental awareness campaign themed “Go Green – Reduce Single-Use Plastic” was successfully conducted at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam. Led by a group of final-year students from the Bachelor of Surveying Science & Geomatics (Honours) program, School of Geomatics Science & Natural Resources, College of Built Environment (CBE), UiTM Shah Alam, the month-long campaign is part of continuous assessment for the Project Management course (GLS692). It’s also in conjunction with the CBE Green Day initiative and UiTM Shah Alam Green Campus Sustainability 2023 Campaign. To support the UiTM and CBE campaign, we have organized the Go Green activity at the school level with its primary goal is to raise awareness among students and staff at the School of Geomatics Science & Natural Resources about the impact of single-use plastic pollution on our environment.
The Go Green Campaign at UiTM Shah Alam commenced with a burst of energy during the exciting “Tumbler Day” competition skillfully organized by CBE on 26th October 2023. The momentum heightened from 6th November to 2nd November with the Plastic Waste Collection initiative, transforming the campus into a hub of sustainability. Strategically placed bins became vibrant symbols of collective effort, turning plastic disposal into a dynamic movement. The collected waste embarked on a purposeful journey to the Recycling Center, sparking a recycling revolution. On 1st December 2023, witnessed the grand activity – a tree planting ceremony graced by Gs. Dr Nafisah Khalid, representative from the Head of Department School of Geomatics Science & Natural Resources. Beyond just planting trees, it was a pledge to sow seeds of sustainability, aligning with UiTM’s mission for a Sustainable Campus by 2025. The Go Green Campaign isn’t just about activities; it’s a spirited movement fostering a united community, leaving a legacy of a greener, more sustainable campus.
Following the lively tree planting ceremony, the momentum soared as the Green Campaign seamlessly transitioned into an environment talk titled ‘Single-use plastic on humans and the Environment,’ unfolding in the grandeur of the Main Lecture Hall. Ts. Gs. Dr Rabieahtul Abu Bakar, a distinguished senior lecturer in the School of Geomatics Science & Natural Resources, took the stage, captivating an audience of about 40 students and staff. The atmosphere crackled with engagement as students were challenged to showcase their understanding through the interactive Kahoot! quiz app. The crescendo of the talk echoed as the clock struck noon, marking the successful conclusion adorned with prize presentations, a thrilling lucky draw, and the bestowment of certificates of appreciation to the esteemed speaker. Beyond the applause, this campaign initiative aspires to be a catalyst for change – a harmonious blend of reducing single-use plastic, safeguarding the environment, and nurturing a sustainable campus ethos. In conclusion, it is essential to continue fostering awareness and commitment to addressing plastic pollution issues. We encourage all stakeholders to actively engage in sustainability efforts to strengthen the steps toward a greener and more sustainable campus.
