SHAH ALAM, 1 June 2023 – UiTM for the fourth consecutive year finds itself ranked in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2023, proving the university’s persistence to attain the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The rankings measure the success of institutions in delivering the UN’s 17 SDGs based on their impact on communities and society. This year, UiTM maintains its strategic position of 101-200 out of 1,591 ranked institutions worldwide with an overall score of 85.9, in comparison to 82.8 last year. Not only that, UiTM maintains its position locally as the second highest in Malaysia, together with Universiti Malaya and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia which also attained the same rank this year.
From the 17 available SDGs, UiTM sent data for eight SDGs this year and witnessed increased scores for most categories compared to last year. This year, UiTM ranks in the top 50 universities worldwide for three SDGs, which are SDG17 (Partnership for the Goals), SDG5 (Gender Equality), and SDG16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). UiTM also ranks in the top 100 universities worldwide for three SDGs, which are SDG7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG4 (Quality Education), and SDG 1 (No Poverty).
For UiTM’s top three categories this year, UiTM managed to increase its rank for SDG5 (Gender Equality) as it attains 33rd position worldwide, a jump of 18 places from its 51st rank last year. For the first time this year, UiTM participated in SDG16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) and finds itself ranked in the 38th position worldwide. Finally, for SDG17 (Partnership for the Goals), which is a mandatory SDG for all institutions in THE Impact Rankings, UiTM ranks 25th worldwide, a jump of 17 places from its 42nd rank last year. The other two SDGs that UiTM participated in this year are SDG3 (Good Health and Wellbeing), and for the first time this year, SDG11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
UiTM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr Hajah Roziah Mohd Janor, expressed her delight over UiTM’s increased scores in THE Impact Rankings this year. “As a university, we support the SDGs in four ways: through teaching, research, stewardship, and outreach. Hence, our performance in THE Impact Rankings reflects our initiatives towards supporting the SDGs, as well as in upholding the Malaysia Madani commitment towards sustainability and prosperity,” she said.
