In a proactive move to foster collaboration between lecturers and external entities, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam took a significant leap forward by hosting a Collaborative Teaching Webinar titled “Wave Equations Unveiled: PDE Applications”. Organized by the School of Mathematical Sciences, College of Computing, Informatics and Mathematics (KPPIM), the one and a half hour webinar which took place on January 2nd 2024, focused on the practical applications of mathematical concepts especially for the Advanced Differential Equation (MAT565) course for the Mechanical and Chemical Engineering students at UiTM’s College of Engineering Studies. The live session webinar was moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr Shaharuddin Cik Soh from the School of Mathematical Sciences, KPPIM, on Microsoft Teams where the session was also recorded for future reference, reflecting UiTM’s dedication to maximizing educational benefits for its students.
The esteemed Dr Fatimah Noor Harun, renowned for her expertise in ‘Differential Equations’ from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), was the invited guest speaker for this insightful session. Acknowledging the prevalent challenge students often face in grasping the real-world applications of mathematical theories, this initiative aimed to bridge the gap between abstract theoretical knowledge and its tangible, practical utility. Dr Fatimah Noor Harun brought a wealth of experience to the virtual podium, sharing invaluable insights into the significance the mastery of Differential Equations plays in the realms of engineering and various industries. This collaborative effort underscored UiTM’s steadfast commitment to enhancing students’ comprehension by exposing them to the real-world applications of their academic pursuits.
The program’s key objectives extended beyond the duration of the webinar itself, aiming to leave a lasting impact on the academic journeys of the participating students. By deliberately choosing a guest lecturer with practical expertise, the program sought not only to educate, but also to instill in students a deep appreciation for the significance of advanced Differential Equations across various industries. Additionally, the main goal was to cultivate a genuine interest in mathematics, strategically dismantling the perceived complexity of the subject to inspire a passion for ongoing learning. Using an online platform aligned with the theme of inclusivity has ensured that students could participate actively regardless of their location. Moreover, this platform flexibility allowed contributions from experts located far from the original classroom, enriching the educational environment with diverse perspectives. As a result, students gained valuable insights and knowledge from various sources.
In conclusion, the Collaborative Teaching Webinar “Wave Equations Unveiled: PDE Applications” stood as a testament to UiTM’s commitment to innovative and collaborative teaching methodologies. The post-event reflection echoes the university’s dedication to educating and enriching students’ academic journeys by connecting theoretical knowledge to practical applications. By bridging the gap between theory and practice, UiTM continues to equip students with the necessary skills for success in their academic and professional pursuits.
