Visibility – The Fundamental in Ranking

It was a very special occasion for the Ranking Champions of UiTM when they had a session with the newly appointed Vice Chancellor of UiTM, Prof Ir. Dr. Mohd Azraai Kassim. This just showed us the importance of university ranking, as it was held one day after the QS University Ranking was announced. In VC’s half an hour session, there were 3 notable highlights.

Firstly, Vice Chancellor used a business model to emphasize on academic fundamentals showing that research, grants and publications are akin to long term investments where dividends are collected later in the form of citations and H Index scores.

Next, as ranking is all about perception, it is a very crucial market strategy. “We might not be crazy about ranking but it is important for us to participate…” as it is a gateway for student enrollment. One important proposal by the VC for visibility was to have the name “Malaysia” after the university name.

Finally, the VC spotlighted some measures to move UiTM forward and make it more visible. The immediate measures include promoting UiTM in conference slides during presentation and all other collaboration activities.

To increase citation, one way mentioned was to place impact and good journal articles at the end of season’s greetings or correspondence mails.

Other measures highlighted during the half an hour session included was about university networking, having double degrees and collaborative research to promote international students.

The importance of post graduate students and postdoctoral students was emphasised as grants, research and publications are major outcomes from students. One easy way to publish and get cited is to write Review papers.

VC stressed on the importance of visibility in a very crisp way and reminded us that

“In this world, you not only need to be good, but people need to know that you are good”.
