Padang Jawa, 9 June 2024 – The flood disaster that struck Kampung Padang Jawa last year inspired final-year students of the College of Computing, Informatics, and Mathematics (KPPIM) at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) to develop a product prototype using Internet of Things (IoT) technology, known as Automatic Flood Barrier or Smart Flood Barrier System.
The prototype initiative can potentially be fully developed to act as a flood barrier device that prevents flood water from entering the homes of the local community. The project, under the supervision of Dr. Surya Sumarni Hussein, functions as a smart automatic flood barrier by applying IoT technology and features a watertight design that can minimize property damage caused by flash floods. One of the locals expressed his thoughts “It would be amazing to see if such technology is to be implemented in our area. This could indeed help reduce the property damage we’ve experienced over the years”.
SULAM 2024 programme is one of the initiatives aimed at empowering and serving the community through volunteer activities. Students are given the opportunity to apply their knowledge practically and discover how the knowledge they have acquired can also improve the living standards of the local community. The activities also support the aspirations of the Fourth and Eleventh Sustainable Development Goals, which are Quality Education and Sustainable Cities and Communities. It is also in line with the visions of Malaysia Madani.
