UiTM Sarawak Organizes ‘Kem Jelajah STEM’ for Schools around Kuching

Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Cawangan Sarawak has successfully organized a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) camp for 99 Form Two students from in and around Kuching, from 26 to 28 July 2019, in its Samarahan 2 Campus.

According to Spokesperson at UiTM Cawangan Sarawak, Dr Ellen Chung, Kem Jelajah STEM was a collaboration between UiTM Sarawak, Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research (MESTR) and Sarawak State Education Department (SSED).

The main objective of this camp is to inculcate interest in STEM among students, in the hope that they will choose Science class in Form Four, and career related to STEM in the future.

Deputy Rector for Research and Industrial Linkages, Associate Professor Dr Abang Zainoren bin Abang Abdurahman thanked MESTR and SSED while speaking at the closing ceremony of the camp on 28 July at UiTM Samarahan and hopes more of such activities initiated by UiTM Cawangan Sarawak will be supported.

In his speech at the closing ceremony, Dr Les Anak Met, Head of Academic Management, Sarawak State Education Department mentioned that there were 24.3% percent of students who chose Science Stream in From 4, a slight increase from 19.7% in 2017 and 23.2% in 2018.

Therefore he hopes such program is able to encourage more students to choose Science Stream in the future. Also present at the closing ceremony was Dr Hajah Asmah @ Rajemah Othman, Principal Assistant Secretary, Workforce Development Division, MESTR, and Associate Professor Dr Hasmah Mohidin, Assistant Rector for UiTM Sarawak Samarahan 2 Campus.

A total of 99 Form Two students from 10 different schools in Kuching, Samarahan and Serian, Lundu and Bau, Demak Baru and Bako, together with 19 accompanying teachers spent 3 days and 2 nights at UiTM Sarawak for the Camp. Up to 50 lecturers from various faculties and 22 student facilitators prepared and carried out ten different activities throughout camp.

Among the activities included making soup from used cooking oil, filtration, exploration, Mind cards, truss tower and deformation test, magnetism, car and balloon race, talent night and motivational talk. Apart from that, the 19 accompanying teachers were also given sessions how to teach using social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Youtube and other aids such as Powtoon and Prezi.

Head of Kem Jelajah STEM 2019, Dr Hwa Tee Yong thanked the top management  of UiTM Sarawak, especially Rector Professor Dato Dr Jamil Hj Hamali for his support towards organizing Kem Jelajah STEM 2019. He also thanked all the staff and students who have helped to make this event a success.
