UiTM Faculty Of Music Spearheading Malaysian-West Jazz Music Innovation

In conjunction of International Jazz Day 2021 hosted by United Nation, Science and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), University Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Faculty of Music will uphold two educational programmes namely UiTM-UNESCO International Jazz Day Celebration 2021 ‘Ethnotopia’ online concert on 28th April 2021 and Rizaltony Talks About Ethnotopia sharing session on 30th April 2021.

International Jazz Day is an annual event celebrated by musicians around the world in the spirit of sharing jazz music knowledge with the general public. As the Malaysians’ higher public education institution, UiTM Faculty of Music takes on the responsibility in ensuring Malaysian public to be well-exposed to the beauty of jazz music.

In accordance of UNESCO’s encouragement in art innovation, UiTM Faculty of Music will bring a juxtaposition of Malay ethnic and cultural inspired songs in the western jazz elements. According to the Program Director, Pn. Janette Jannah Poheng, “This concert will present a number of music arrangements on existing Malay popular and ethnic songs followed by the premier of new original compositions by the faculty’s lecturers.”

According to the Music Director, Mr. Rizal Tony, “The Ethnotopia theme forwards Malay ethnic concept and traditional instruments in which will be played in western jazz styles. To make this into a realization, the song arrangements and new compositions were specially made for this concert with the intention of bringing Malay culture uniqueness to the eyes of the world.”

This free concert will highlight RizalTony Group featuring Kamrul Hussin, Alwagera, AzieDarwish, Hajarul Bajunid, Sarah Alia, Shahir Sharis, Ahmad Munir and Dollah Gambus. The concert will be available on the faculty’s YouTube channel namely UiTMMusic on 28th April 2021.
