5th of September 2024 – At a virtual meeting at 8.30 pm Malaysian time and 8.30 am, Michigan time, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) commemorates the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between UiTM and Western Michigan University, The United States of America.
The signing of the MOU was finalized on 12th August 2024 after a year’s work and detailed negotiations. This is indeed a momentous occasion and both universities look forward to working together. This event has its beginnings with the unofficial visit of Professor Christopher Hodshire to UiTMCNS, Seremban campus. Prof. Hodshire was a former visiting Professor to USM, Penang in 2010. This is partly how the connections were made where Prof. Hodshire met with Associate Professor Dr. Angeline Ranjethamoney Vijayarajoo, from the Academy of Language Studies, UiTM Negeri Sembilan. From there, the connections began a year ago.
Western Michigan University has had ties with Malaysia decades ago, hence making this a revival of international relationships with Malaysia.
This MOU is led by the Academy of Language Studies, UiTMCNS, Seremban campus, and headed by Professor Dr. Yamin Yasin, the Acting Rector of UiTM Negeri Sembilan.
The Acting Rector, Professor Dr. Yamin Yasin is very pleased with this step and congratulates the Academy of Language Studies in the Seremban Campus, for this initiative. He himself has been a great source of support in this initiative, guiding the Academy of Language studies, without which, this development could not have taken off the ground.
One of the first activities that will kick start this MOU, is collaborations between the Accounting Schools of both universities. This will be followed with other schools as well. The Accounting school offers PhD programmes as well, being an asset to Western Michigan University.
This MOU has opened doors for UiTM to look West for more collaborations, leveraging on the many areas of potential while doing the same for WMU.
This is indeed one big leap forward for UiTM Malaysia and WMU, with both universities beginning a new chapter of their lives of International Collaborations.
