“Transforming Rivers and Inspiring Innovation: CeLEAP’s River Restoration and Filter Design Event Leaves a Lasting Impression on Science Stream Students at SMK Seksyen 9 Shah Alam”

SHAH ALAM, 7th June 2023 – As part of the Program Civil Engineering – Learn & Apply (CeLEAP), final year students pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with Honours organized an educational event titled “Talk of the Transformation: River Restoration and Filter Design Competition.” The event was held at SMK Seksyen 9 Shah Alam, and it demonstrated the students’ commitment to raising awareness about river rehabilitation and promoting innovative solutions. The program was attended by students from the Science Stream in Form 4. The purpose of the talk was to emphasize the critical importance of rehabilitating the Klang River and its implications for human health.

Pn Norfaezah Shamsudin, an UiTM alumna and Project Manager at Landasan Lumayan Sdn. Bhd, delivered an informative presentation highlighting the diverse factors influencing river pollution. Pn Norfaezah Shamsudin also discussed the Selangor Maritim Gateway, a prominent project led by Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI) and entrusted to Landasan Lumayan Sdn. Bhd since 2017. Pn Norfaezah emphasized the startling amount of solid waste collected from the Klang River, which reached an astounding 80 tons per day. She described interceptor technology used in Malaysia as a solution to this pressing problem. She did, however, express concern that the country’s reliance on two interceptors indicates excessive solid waste production, requiring immediate action.

In addition to the talk, the students organized an enthralling filter design competition for SMK Seksyen 9 students. The participants were challenged to design a filtration system that could produce clear water from a soil-contaminated sample. This competition served as an educational opportunity for students, giving them an understanding of the treatment methods used to purify water resources.NMH Consult generously sponsored the event, ensuring its success and the students’ ability to make a difference.Nur Nabilah Binti Zamri, Muhammad Fazlan Bin Zulkafli, Nurhaziqah Binti Hazli, Aiman Maisara Binti Mohammad Yusri, and Noor Syakirah Binti Ramlan were among the students from the School of Civil Engineering who served as organizers.

Ir. Dr. Suzana Ramli, a senior lecturer in the School of Civil Engineering and acting supervisor for the program, managed the students’ efforts and provided valuable guidance throughout the project. The CeLEAP program provided secondary students with the opportunity to gain practical knowledge and apply engineering skills that were taught to them, enabling them to tackle real-world problems. The event demonstrated the dedication of civil engineering students to making a positive impact on environmental sustainability and fostering innovation in the field of civil engineering for school students.
