Feb 21, 2024, Kuala Lumpur – Mr Syed Hamadah Syed Othman, the prominent Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Tabung Haji, has been officially appointed as the Adjunct Professor of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in a ceremony hosted at the prestigious Tabung Haji Headquarters, Kuala Lumpur. The honorable appointment symbolised a remarkable achievement of the university’s ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between academia and industry professionals.
Mr. Syed Hamadah Syed Othman has a well-established history with UiTM since 2019, having priorly served as an Adjunct Professor of the Faculty of Computing and Mathematical Sciences (now known as the College of Computing, Informatics and Mathematics) during his tenure as the Chief Executive Officer of Kumpulan Wang Persaraan (Diperbadankan). Recognising his significant contributions and commitment to advancing actuarial science in UiTM, he was reappointed as an Adjunct Professor in 2021. His continued dedication and expertise have undoubtedly enriched and empowered the academic and industry linkage experiences within UiTM.
The ceremony commenced with an opening speech by the Chairman of UiTM’s University Board of Directors, Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr. Raduan Che Rose. His address included the significant achievement of UiTM being the first public university in Malaysia to receive the highest number of actuarial professional exemption papers from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) United Kingdom. This remarkable accomplishment demonstrates productive collaborations between UiTM and its industrial partners and emphasises the institution’s undivided dedication to obtaining full exemptions for the students.
Subsequently, Mr Syed Hamadah Syed Othman delivered an inspiring speech where he explained the multi-faceted role of Tabung Haji of not only aiming to improve the economic development of the community but also managing a range of Sharia-compliant financial services and investments to its depositors and other stakeholders. He also highlighted the organisation’s pivotal role in facilitating the logistical aspects of the Hajj pilgrimage. With this appointment, Mr Syed Hamadah Syed Othman wished to elevate the standard and competitiveness of UiTM students, especially those studying in the actuarial science programme, to be successfully and strategically placed in the job market. He also emphasised the importance of aligning academic programs with industry standards, equipping the students with the information and skills they need to succeed in the actuarial sciences industry.
The appointment letter for the adjunct professorship was presented by the Vice Chancellor of UiTM, Professor Datuk Dr. Shahrin Sahib @ Sahibudin, in the presence of Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr. Raduan Che Rose and Professor Ts Dr. Haryani Haron, the Assistant Vice Chancellor of the College of Computing, Informatics and Mathematics (KPPIM), UiTM Shah Alam. The ceremony was also attended by senior management representatives from Tabung Haji and KPPIM, UiTM, KPPIM’s lecturers, actuarial science students, and UiTM alumni.
The ceremony concluded on a high note, with attendees expressing optimism about the future of academic-industry partnerships and the invaluable contributions of adjunct professors in shaping the next generation of leaders.
