Supporting the Fighters, Admiring the Survivors, Celebrating Hopes: Medical Imaging Students from UiTM Puncak Alam Host a Breast Cancer Awareness Program at SMK (P) Kapar Klang

Klang, 5th June 2024 – The students from Bachelor of Medical Imaging (Hons) UiTM Puncak Alam comprised of part-time Institute of Continuing Education and Profesional Studies (iCEPS) and full-time students under the guidance of Miss Rafidah Supar have successfully organized a Breast Cancer Awareness Program at SMK (P) Kapar Klang. The objective of the program is to spread knowledge among young school girls regarding breast cancer.

The Medical Imaging students managed to acquire collaboration with Majlis Kanser Malaysia (MAKNA), Persatuan Mencegah Dadah Malaysia (PEMADAM), Agensi Antidadah Kebangsaan (AADK) and Pejabat Kesihatan Daerah Klang for the awareness program. The program is also aiming for fundraising which will support breast cancer survivors and fighters, which is successfully secured by the Medical Imaging students. The lists of sponsors comprised of KDEB Waste Management, Avant Med, Technorad, Mewah-Oils, LAC Medical, Medi-diagnostic, ABEX Medical, Inter-bakti, Weansa Solutions, Synteq Medical, Oligo, Zus Coffee, Geliga, Gamma, GE Healthcare, KPJ Johor, Siemens, and AnnJffr.

The program started with a speech from Madam Ann Erynna Lema Thomas Sudin, Head of Centre for Medical Imaging Studies UiTM Puncak Alam. She congratulated the Medical Imaging students for their effort to make the program successful. She is also given the honour to officiate the program with a gimmick. The VIP guests are then ushered to visit the exhibition booths, Breast Self-Examination and Clinical Breast Examination rooms.

The Breast Cancer Awareness Program commenced with a breast cancer talk given by Mr. Ahmad Nu’man from MAKNA. The insights of the talk include the introduction to breast cancer, its signs and symptoms, and preventative measures.

Apart from the educational talk, the Medical Imaging students prepared a bunch of interesting activities such as poster making competition, quizzes, montage show and free flow of drinks from Oligo truck and Vitagen. The students are given an opportunity to learn Breast Self Examination themselves by the experienced mammographers from part-time (iCEPS) Medical Imaging students. The students also managed to learn new information by visiting the exhibition booths and also had a chance to play VR (Virtual Reality) headset prepared by MAKNA to have a 3D experience.

The teachers of SMK (P) Kapar Klang are given another educational talk regarding Cervix Cancer whilst the students are engaging with their own activities. The experienced nurses from Pejabat Kesihatan Daerah Klang has given the teachers a free session of pap smear for detection of HPV, apart from giving a talk on the topic.

The program ended with prize giving ceremony to the students and closing speech by the emcees. A group picture with the students and teachers is taken as a commemorate.

Last but not least, the breast cancer awareness program is successfully executed despite obstacles of having both part-time and full-time students to work together as a team. The key of the program which is to fundraise for the program is also a major success, thus the program can commence and also an opportunity to show support for breast cancer survivors and fighters. Hopefully, the program can help the young high school girls to be more aware of their breast health and can acquire new knowledge which can benefit them later.
