The recycling campaign at UiTM Bandaraya Melaka was born from a collective desire among students to foster a more environmentally conscious campus. It began as a grassroots movement, initiated by a passionate group of BBA (Hons) Marketing final-year students from UiTM Kampus Bandaraya Melaka, along with a lecturer, who recognized the pressing need to address waste management issues within the university.
The campaign aims to encourage UiTM Bandaraya Melaka students to actively engage in recycling activities and educate them on the right way to recycle waste and the importance of recycling. By promoting the 3R (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle) education program through activities conducted throughout the campaign duration. This relies on the series of activities in three days using a comprehensive approach to engage and educate the students to adopt more environmentally conscious behaviors.
The primary objectives were to inform students of the effects of not practicing recycling to surroundings, to educate them on how to recycle activities efficiently in UiTM Kampus Bandaraya Melaka and build belief among students about the importance of recycling to the environment.
The execution of the campaign involves extensive preparation with activities for three days. The execution includes recycling collection, educational online quizzes, followed by a series of educational posts and questions and answers sessions throughout the campaign duration. The campaign ended with enlightening educational talk from collaboration with SWCorp (Solid Waste, Melaka.
Initial findings indicate that there was a low level of awareness in recycling among UiTM Kampus Bandaraya Melaka students which were collected from pre-survey evaluation contributed at the early campaign execution. The significance of the campaign successful outcomes were encouraging with the increase of level awareness and the participation of students in recycling activities.
SoCCoM 4.0 Big Little Things is an innovative programme, one of the few recycling programmes carried out at UiTM Bandaraya Melaka which encompasses a few SDG’s elements which contributes to SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) to stimulate recycle awareness and encourage recycling practices for creating a more sustainable and environmentally conscious community within university campus.
