Professional Discourse Series by the Faculty of Education Featured Dr. Shelda Debowski, Australia’s Renowned Expert of Educational Leadership

On March 11th, 2020, Dr. Shelda Debowski, Australia’s leading international expert in educational leadership and tertiary education development had delivered a talk on The Secrets to Academic Success. The talk was one of the Professional Discourse Series organized by the Asian Centre for Research on University Learning and Teaching (ACRULeT), a center of excellence at the Faculty of Education.

Dr. Debowski shared 10 tips to academic success and these tips are applicable in many contexts within academic settings, particularly in learning endeavors as well as a professional pursuit. She first laid down the challenges in the academic world and these included meeting an array of expectations; balancing conflicting demands; building skills and capabilities; and adapting to new circumstances, roles and demands. She also shared the key principles to achieving success and emphasized that the outcomes of a successful career should include visibility, making a difference, narratives and evidence.

Dr. Debowski is a professional member of the Australian Psychological Society and a certified member of the Australian Human Resource Institute. A Churchill Fellow with a PhD in Organizational Psychology, Dr. Debowski has a long history in higher education as a Deputy Vice Chancellor, professor of higher education and academic within the disciplines of business and education.
