Padang Jawa, May 23, 2024 – A Digital Literacy Program was organised at Sekolah Kebangsaan Padang Jawa by final-year students from the College of Computing, Informatics, and Mathematics (KPPIM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam. The program, under the Service-Learning Malaysia – University for Society (SULAM) initiative, involved final-year students from the Bachelor of Information Systems Engineering (CS266) and Bachelor of Computer Science Multimedia Computing (CS253) programs at KPPIM, as well as 60 sixth-grade students from Sekolah Kebangsaan Padang Jawa.
Various engaging activities were conducted, including the “Coding Treasure Hunt,” aimed at providing basic knowledge and exposure to HTML and CSS programming. The “Coding Treasure Hunt” is an interactive activity designed to engage elementary school students in learning HTML and CSS through fun and challenging games. The goal is to find hidden “treasures” by solving clues and completing coding tasks.
Additionally, an activity called ‘Digital Literacy’ was also held. This activity introduced ethical skills in sourcing, editing, and sharing multimedia content. The program aimed to expose sixth-grade students to video editing techniques using the popular CapCut application. Video editing with this application involves cutting video clips, adding transitions between videos, and adjusting audio to produce high-quality videos.
UiTM also held a digital awareness exhibition to increase the primary school students’ understanding of the use of cyber technology, thus preventing them from becoming victims of online crimes. This exhibition was conducted interactively, providing several cybersecurity-themed games and guidelines for the responsible use of technology as a means to attract students’ interest in conveying information effectively.
In his speech, Mr. Mohd Salahuddin bin Nayyan, Headmaster of Sekolah Kebangsaan Padang Jawa, stated that this program greatly benefited the students. This sentiment was echoed by Ms. Husna, the Design and Technology teacher at SK Padang Jawa, who emphasized that the program’s content had a positive impact on the students, particularly in terms of social skills, problem-solving skills, and programming.
Participants generally responded positively regarding the increase in their digital knowledge. “I have successfully created my own short video,” commented one participant, who felt enthusiastic after learning some basic media editing skills.
