June 14, 2024 – Jawi script, derived from Arabic, is used to write Malay language phonetically. It’s an integral part of Malay cultural heritage, fostering traditional literacy and preserving linguistic identity. The Jawi Writing Workshop, skillfully conducted by Academy of Language Studies of UiTM Shah Alam, sought to enhance lecturers’ and students’ familiarity with Jawi spelling and writing.
50 individuals, including both lecturers and students affiliated with the Academy of Language Studies, were in attendance at the workshop. Leading the session was Professor Madya Dr. Adi Yasran bin Abdul Aziz. As the workshop’s designated speaker, Dr. Adi Yasran guided participants through the nuances of Jawi writing, sharing insights and expertise garnered from his academic and professional experience. Through collaborative learning and engagement, attendees were equipped with valuable skills and knowledge to further explore and preserve this significant aspect of cultural heritage.
The workshop commenced at 9:30 a.m., marking the beginning with participant registration and breakfast provisions. From 10:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., the core segment unfolded, comprising the workshop lecture, wherein attendees delved into the intricacies of Jawi writing. Subsequently, a dedicated question and answer session ensued, allowing participants to seek clarification and engage further with the workshop’s content. This structured schedule facilitated a comprehensive learning experience, ensuring ample time for both instruction and interactive dialogue, fostering a conducive environment for knowledge exchange and skill development.
The workshop offered lecturers and students a significant chance to augment their proficiency in Jawi writing, enriching their understanding and skill set in this domain. It is anticipated that ongoing initiatives of this nature will further advance the preservation and recognition of Jawi script, thereby fostering its continued appreciation within the academic community and beyond. Such endeavors contribute to the broader goal of safeguarding cultural heritage and linguistic diversity, ensuring that traditions like Jawi writing endure and thrive in contemporary contexts.
