“Getting Published and Cited” Workshop: Outreach Initiative to Boost UiTM Publication and Citation Performance

Beginning January 2019, the Institute of Quality and Knowledge Advancement (InQKA) has embarked on a new version of writing workshops called “Getting Published and Cited”. The main focus of this workshop is to facilitate UiTM staff especially from branch campuses to improve their publication performance,  both in terms of quantity and also quality academic writing. The first session of the workshop was held in Chendering campus, Trengganu from  22 – 24 January followed by 2 parallel sessions in Bandaraya Melaka and Segamat, a week later from 29-31 January.

This workshop is part  of  InQKA’s  strategic planning initiative this year by the Rating and Ranking unit, whose main focus is to strategize in increasing publications and citations by UiTM academic staff in ‘business unusual’ mode so that UiTM can achieve its goal to be in the  top 100 QS Asian University Ranking by 2020.

The 3-day course was conducted by InQKA’s Resident Reviewer Professors who consisted of  Prof. Dr Azni Zain Ahmed, Prof. Datin Dr. Hajibah Osman, Prof. Dr. Azemi Samsuri, Prof. Dr Faridah Hj Hassan and Assoc. Prof Halilah Jasmani. Their sharing included observations on weaknesses and errors based on manuscripts received in the last six months through the newly launched electronic article review tracking system (e-RTS).

Unlike previous writing workshops conducted by InQKA, this workshop was tailored specifically to the participants’ writing skill-needs which were classified into three levels, namely beginner, intermediate and advance levels. The modules presented at the campuses were customized to optimise the benefit and effectiveness obtained by the participants as well as the Reviewer Professors.

Feedback from the workshop participants were very positive, and they found the workshop not only helpful but also enjoyable. They commented on how they felt very motivated to produce high-quality papers  to be  published in reputational Q1 and Q2 journals in the near future. InQKA is looking forward for the same positive response when the workshop will be held according to the schedule in the other UiTM campuses throughout the nation including Sabah and Sarawak.

We hope that this type of engagement will serve as a platform to produce more emerging young talents and inspire senior academics to create a competitive environment, where the academic staff  will be encouraged to produce high quality academic papers in a sustainable way.
