5 July 2024 – The Centre for Environmental Health and Safety Studies proudly hosted this year’s FSK Health Sciences Summer Camp, welcoming 11 students from Teesside University for a month-long immersive experience from 20 June to 20 July 2024). The highlight of the summer camp was the “Heritage and Cultural Excursion to Kuantan and Sungai Lembing” from July 5-8, 2024.
The excursion commenced with a visit to the picturesque Teluk Cempedak beach, setting a serene tone for the activities to follow. The evening saw students engaging in net fishing and beach games at Cempaka Beach, where they also had the opportunity to interact with the local community. Participants also took part in impactful activities during the Gotong-Royong Mega Perangi Aedes & One Hour Malaysia Cleanup, aligned with the Program Madani Rakyat Zon Timur 2024 at RRM Permatang Badak, Kuantan. The event was officiated by YBhg. Datuk Dr. Rusdi bin Abd. Rahman, Director of Health for Pahang.
The students also had the privilege of visiting Tenun Pahang Diraja, where they delved into the traditional art of royal weaving and marveled at the intricate designs that symbolize Malaysia’s rich cultural tapestry. Another highlight was the International Kite Festival at Pantai Sepat Kuantan, where vibrant kites of various shapes and sizes filled the sky, creating a festive atmosphere that the students thoroughly enjoyed. The day began early with a breathtaking sunrise trek up Sunrise Hill, offering stunning views of Kuantan’s landscape. This adventure was followed by a visit to the tranquil Sungai Jin waterfall, where the students enjoyed the serene environment and refreshing waters.
Additionally, the camp featured a significant malaria activity with the Orang Asli community at Bukit Bakong. Students participated in health education sessions, learned about the community’s malaria control efforts, and conducted Blood Film for Malaria Parasite (BFMP) tests. This hands-on experience provided valuable insights into public health practices in rural settings.
Adding to the cultural immersion, students spent another weekend at Kampung Haji Dorani, experiencing the essence of rural Malaysian life. They engaged in traditional activities such as fishing, kite making, and cooking local dishes. This stay offered a unique glimpse into the daily lives of the villagers and the rich cultural heritage of the area, further enriching the students’ understanding and appreciation of Malaysia’s diverse culture.
The month has been a remarkable journey of learning, cultural exchange, and unforgettable experiences for the Teesside University students. The students were also exposed to fun academic modules by Centre for Environmental Health and Safety Studies, Centre for Physiotherapy Studies, Centre for Dietetics Studies and Centre for Medical Imaging Studies. The Program Director of the FSK Health Sciences Summer Camp 2024, Assoc. Prof. Dr Farah Ayuni Shafie is grateful for the success of the camp made possible by the immense support from Dr Muhammad Afiq Zaki, UiTM Teesside University Coordinator, the faculty members, environmental health team of Pejabat Kesihatan Daerah Kuantan and the Malaysian Association of Environmental Health.
