A team of counselors and educational psychologists from the Faculty of Education has won a gold medal for their innovative and impactful product ‘The Counselor’s Kit’ at the recently held International Invention and Innovative Competition (InIIC) Series 2/2019.
The Counselor’s Kit is a comprehensive package aimed to promote and empower mental health among young people. Consists of educational games developed based on psychological theories, each of the games addresses different aspects of mental health. The Career Cards and board games, for example, focus on instilling motivation for future goals; whereas the Wheel of ME aimed to increase self-awareness.
ABCDE boxes, flip cards and another set of board game assist users with a step-by-step process of rationalizing irrational beliefs. In addition, the kit also comes with ABC Stress, a handbook containing a set of self-assessment instruments with information and tips crucial for young users to identify the symptoms of stress, be aware of the stressors and the how-to in coping with stress.
The team, which comprised of Dr. Sharifah Muzlia Syed Mustafa (leader), Dr. Rosilawati Sueb, Puan Nurul Fitriah Alias and Puan Lina Mursidah Hamzah from the Faculty of Education; as well as Cik Noorshaahidah Mohamed Shukri from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, based the development of their product on the severity of mental health issues among teenagers and adolescents. The team has chartered their plan for next year including partnering with the Ministry of Education (MOE) and carry out programs in schools.
InIIC is held annually organized by the MNNF Network and MNNF Publisher in collaboration with the Advanced Scientific Press (ASP) and Kind Heart Charity. This year’s event themed Leading towards Creativity and Innovation was held on November 2, 2019 at the Palace of Golden Horses, Selangor.
