Embracing Heritage By Empowering Communities: Interpretive Plan Development For Teluk Intan, Perak

SHAH ALAM, 23 January 2025 – Studies of Parks and Amenity Management, College of Built Environment successfully conducted the Final Presentation of the Interpretative Plan Development for Teluk Intan, Perak. This program, organized by semester 4 students as part of the requirement of the course code PMG550 (Park and Amenity Management Studio 1) under the supervision of two lecturer; Mrs. Sri Rahayu Mohd Sa’ad and Mrs. Nurul Akmaniza Mohd Nasir, aimed to showcase innovative ideas and strategies for heritage conservation and tourism development in Teluk Intan. The session was officiated by Datin Seri Mazzueen Md Khalid, representing the Coordinator of Studies and featured by four expert panel who kindly shared their valuable insights and expertise.

The expert panelist included Mr. Muhammad Sharil Hamir and Mrs. Nur Fatin Sakinah Che Imbi from the Teluk Intan Municipal Council, Mr. Saiful Reza Mohd Razali as a representative of the Teluk Intan local community and the external examiner, Mr. Mohd Yussainy Md Yusop, Director of Forest and State Eco-Park from Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia. In her opening remarks, Datin Seri Mazzueen Md Khalid emphasized the importance of external collaboration with industry experts to enhance the visibility of the department and provide students with real-world experience in creating interpretation plans. She highlighted the department’s commitment to fostering such initiatives to strengthen industry-academia partnerships.

The interpretation plan development proposal was presented by two consultants that are Realm Craft Consultant led by Mr Hasnain and Nami Heritage Consultant led by Mr Muhammad Haziq. The proposal focused on identifying potential heritage and cultural checkpoints in Teluk Intan, emphasizing the cultural and historical significance of the area. Key objectives of the plan included promoting Teluk Intan as a premier travel destination and boosting the local economy through its diverse tourism activities. This program followed by the exhibition visits from expert panels and audience to gain insight about the interpretation panels exclusively made by students. The panel was created to improve the visitor experience on-site for the suggested self-guided trails. The audience may touch and feel the panel presented on that day making the experience more interactive and gain deeper knowledge about the uniqueness of cultural and heritage elements of Teluk Intan.

This initiative demonstrates the students’ commitment to producing impactful projects that bridge the gap between academic learning and practical application. It also highlights the potential of Teluk Intan’s cultural and natural heritage significance to contribute to the sustainable tourism and community development.
