As a form of appreciation, UiTM Chamber Choir (UCC) from the Faculty of Music, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Malaysia dedicated a tribute video to Malaysia’s frontline staff for their services in countering the COVID-19 pandemic. The piece was put together very creatively under the watchful guidance of the UCC director, Associate Professor Dr Masashi Kishimoto, who visualized, initiated and completed the project within six days. The footage highlights the importance of social distancing and the students performed remotely from the comfort of their homes.
A traditional lullaby of the Malay Archipelago, ‘Soleram’ is one of the signature tunes performed by UCC. The song tells of longing and everlasting friendship with an important message that warns against bidding a goodnight kiss, which may cause distress to the infant. As the world embraces distancing as the new social order, the song accurately depicts an alienation from others but also shows the yearnings for physical and emotional solace. Included in the footage is an appreciation to the university and the people of Malaysia for providing support to the students’ welfare and wellbeing throughout these troubled times.
Malaysia enforced the movement control order (MCO) on March 18th 2020 and we are currently in the fourth phase. The video made its debut in late March 2020 and is being telecasted via various national TV stations in the country. When the movement control order continued on April 1st 2020, Bernama News Channel (which is operated by BERNAMA, the national news agency of Malaysia), embedded the video with the Prime Minister’s address to the nation, appealing to all Malaysians with a strong message #stay at home which is the only way to break the chain.
In their message of compassion and encouragement, UCC creatively continues to captivate and inspire the nation during these challenging times. Please see the UCC talents and their tribute via video.
