Collaboration between UiTM and ANM Launches Archives Exploration Program: Record Management in Malaysia

Puncak Perdana, Thursday, 6 June 2024 – The Archive Exploration Program: Records Management in Malaysia, organized by Master’s students of Information Management (CDIM770), College of Computing, Informatics, and Mathematics (KPPIM) in collaboration with the National Archives of Malaysia (ANM), was successfully held at the Tun Abdul Razak Library (PTAR), UiTM Puncak Perdana Campus. Various activities were conducted throughout this program.

The program began with a talk delivered by Puan Kaszilawati binti Kasman, Head of the Consultancy and Training Section, ANM, emphasizing the importance of records management and the preservation of historical documents as national heritage. The talk content captured the participants’ attention with Puan Kaszilawati’s insights on the future direction of the records management field in Malaysia. The program continued with a document preservation demonstration by ANM staff, showcasing techniques for preserving and binding valuable documents. This demonstration was well-received by the participants, who were also given the opportunity to try out some of the preservation techniques.

Additionally, the exhibition organized by ANM also received a positive response from the participants. The exhibition, titled “Records Management: Keeping Up with the Times,” showcased the early history and records management programs in Malaysia, as well as the adoption of an electronic work environment culture. Moreover, UiTM held an exhibition about the history and development of UiTM to educate students on the origins of UiTM’s establishment in Malaysia.

Dr. Haslinda Husaini, the program advisor, praised the efforts of the students from the Advocacy Marketing and Promotion in Information Organizations Course (MLS793) at the Master’s level in organizing this program. She believes that the programs, activities, and workshops will help students become more aware of records management in Malaysia. It also fosters relationships between the university and industry in promoting information literacy and records management knowledge among students.

According to participant Amira Syafikah, a CDIM261 student, the program offered beneficial activities such as the records preservation demonstration, which provided experience and raised awareness about the importance of preserving records. Moreover, senior lecturer, Puan Aniza binti Jamaludin said that such demonstrations are very helpful for students in understanding the document preservation process more effectively.

Nearly 200 participants attended the program, which ran from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Through this initiative, the involved master’s students were given the opportunity to apply their knowledge practically and understand how the information acquired in the classroom can be implemented to raise community awareness. This activity also supports the aspirations of the fourth and eleventh Sustainable Development Goals, which are Quality Education and Sustainable Cities and Communities. It is also in line with the vision of Malaysia Madani.
