Podcast on Urban Resilience Engages Ipoh and Social Media Citizens

Ipoh, June 5, 2024 – The recent podcast titled “Responding to Climate Change Challenges in Urban Environments: Resilient Cities” was a resounding success. Hosted by three main stakeholders in Environmental Health; Majlis Bandaraya Ipoh, Centre for Environmental Health and Safety Studies of Faculty of Health Sciences, UiTM Selangor, Puncak Alam Campus and the Malaysian Association of Environmental Health, the event saw active participation and collaboration from various sectors and the local community.

The podcast featured esteemed speakers including TPR. Dr. Zulqarnain Mohamad, Chief Secretariat of Ipoh Doughnut Economic City, Prof. Dr. Jamal Hisham bin Hashim, Honorary Member of the Malaysian Association of Environmental Health, and TPR. Tuan Haji Zainal Abdul Hamid, Director of Town Planning Department, Ipoh City Council. The session was moderated by Ts. Muhammad Salihin Bin Mohd Sabri, one of the Master in Environmental Health and Safety students and officiated by Mayor of Ipoh City, Datuk Rumaizi Baharin.

Discussions centered around innovative strategies for enhancing urban resilience in the face of climate change, highlighting practical solutions and collaborative efforts essential for building sustainable urban environments. Key points included the implementation of green infrastructure, the promotion of low-carbon urban development, and the importance of community engagement in resilience planning.

The choice of a podcast as the medium for this event was strategic, aiming to maximize reach and engagement. Podcasts offer a versatile platform that allows participants to join from various locations, ensuring that more people could be involved without the constraints of physical attendance. This format also enabled real-time interaction, allowing the citizens of Ipoh to actively engage with the speakers and contribute to the discussion. This widespread participation featured the community’s commitment to addressing climate change challenges and contributing to the city’s sustainable future. The podcast was coordinated by Master in Environmental Health and Safety Students as part of the Urban Health and Sustainable Development course evaluation. The master by coursework program is now open for October 2024 intake.
