Kampung Budiman, 22 November 2025 – Final-year students from the Faculty of Science and Mathematical Sciences (FSKM), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam, have successfully launched an innovative flood‑monitoring initiative known as the “Flood Guard Mobile App Budi@larm”. The launch took place at the public hall in Kampung Budiman, Meru, marking a significant milestone in community–university collaboration under the Service-Learning Malaysia – University for Society (SULAM) initiative.
The program reflects a strong partnership between students and Kampung Budiman residents, supported by both UiTM and the local community. Through this initiative, the university aims to contribute to community empowerment, local economic stimulation, and long-term sustainability. The project also demonstrates the practical application of academic knowledge while strengthening ties between UiTM and the local community in efforts to build a safer and more resilient environment.
Guided by FSKM UiTM senior lecturers Dr. Azlin Ahmad and Ts. Dr. Surya Sumarni Binti Hussein, the program involved 26 students working closely with Kampung Budiman residents. Motivated by the frequent flooding in the area, the students developed a mobile application designed to deliver early flood warnings and improve local flood‑management capabilities. The initiative aims to reduce the risks and impact of recurring floods, ensuring better safety and preparedness for residents.
A key component of the project includes prototype warning poles equipped with ultrasonic sensors capable of continuously monitoring water levels surrounding Kampung Budiman. Through the Budi@larm mobile application, residents will receive early alerts when water levels rise, allowing them to take timely protective measures.
The program received overwhelmingly positive feedback from Kampung Budiman residents. Survey findings revealed strong agreement among respondents that the initiative provided valuable knowledge and had a meaningful impact on the community’s flood preparedness. The demonstration of the Budi@larm application was particularly well-received for its potential to enhance safety and awareness. The event was also attended by notable community leader Mr. Imran Bin Kairon, Chairman of JPKK Kampung Budiman.
This initiative forms part of UiTM’s broader efforts to empower communities through volunteerism and applied learning. It offers students hands-on experience, enabling them to apply their academic skills to real-world challenges and contribute to improving the local community’s quality of life. The program also aligns with the aspirations of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4: Quality Education and Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
Through the “Flood Guard Mobile App Budi@larm” project, UiTM continues to demonstrate its commitment to nurturing knowledgeable, responsible and socially conscious graduates, while fostering meaningful engagement with local communities.
