UiTM Students Take the Lead in Advancing SDG Goals Through River Conservation Project

Pulau Pangkor, 18 October 2025 – The Landscape Architecture Design Students (LADS) Association of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Perak, in strategic collaboration with the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) Manjung and the local community of Kampung Teluk Nipah, successfully implemented a University Social Responsibility (USR) programme aimed at promoting environmental stewardship and sustainable community development.

Held over two days, the programme focused on the conservation and enhancement of the local river ecosystem—an essential natural resource that supports ecological balance and the tourism-driven economy of Kampung Teluk Nipah. This initiative integrated academic knowledge with practical fieldwork, strengthening partnerships between UiTM, government agencies, and community stakeholders.

Key activities included river clean-up operations, tree planting, on-site water quality monitoring using YSI Multi Parameter equipment, and the development of preliminary landscape design concepts to guide future environmental improvements. These hands-on efforts provided students with real-world exposure to environmental challenges, enhancing technical expertise, analytical skills, and sustainability-oriented thinking.

Aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 4: Quality Education and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, the programme fostered experiential learning while promoting shared responsibility for environmental care. Technical guidance from JPS ensured compliance with recognised river management standards. A JPS Manjung representative remarked, “This collaboration reflects the importance of shared expertise in strengthening local environmental governance.”

The LADS USR initiative underscores UiTM’s commitment to impactful environmental engagement through strategic partnerships and applied learning. Moving forward, LADS aims to expand collaborative efforts that support resilient ecosystems and empower communities toward long-term sustainability.
