The International Symposium on Application of Engineered Timber Products Towards High Rise is jointly organized by Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB) with the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). The one day event has been conducted on 15th November 2018 from 8.00 AM to 5.00 PM at Hotel Istana, Kuala Lumpur.
The objectives of this symposium are to share knowledge during the lecture sessions besides allowing the participants to take time to enjoy fascinating Malaysia with its tropical setting, friendly people and multi-cultural cuisine.
As timber changes the skylines all over the world, more builders are learning about wood’s innate qualities as a superior building material. As the only renewable and sustainable construction material, timber is making its presence felt in Malaysia. Thus, this symposium is going to be one of the largest gatherings of wood and construction industry experts in Malaysia which focuses on mass timber in mid- to high rise building construction. Apart from that, this symposium also explores the supply chain for cross-laminated timber (CLT), glulam and laminated veneer lumber, and the opportunities for mass timber building in global construction.
The advancement of technology in the world need to be shared. It is absolutely imperative that a means of technological know-how transfer is introduced to bridge the technological gap between countries more so in this globalization and digital era. Therefore, among the objectives of the symposium are to introduce and enhance the community’s knowledge on wood engineering products and technologies, address issues and challenges of using timber in Malaysia’s construction industry and enhancing the use of wood engineering products and technologies as industrialized building system (IBS).
The symposium would include numbers of topics regarding the state-of-the-art aspects of timber engineering and application such as renaissance and building codes for engineered wood products, potential of tropical timber for high rise buildings and experience with high rise timber buildings in the UK. Other topics includes the Australian examples and demand for high rise mass timber in Australia and fire design and safety of timber structures designed according to the standard procedures and code of practices.
The symposium was officiated by the Ministry of Primary Industries, YB Puan Teresa Kok and presented by 6 renowned speakers who have extensive knowledge in their respective fields especially on the research and application of wood engineering products in developed countries.
The speakers was:
1) Dato’ Dr. Jalaluddin Harun, Director General of Malaysian Timber Industry Board
2) Dr. Simon Aicher, MPA University of Stuttgart, Germany
3) Prof. Dr. Zakiah Ahmad, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia
4) Mr. Philipp Zumbrunnen, URBAN Limited London, UK
5) Mr. Timothy Crawshaw, BVN Architecture, Australia
6) Prof. Dr. Alar Just, Tallin Technical University, Estland, Estonia.
