Virtual Power Plant (VPP) appeared as a new cloud base model that aggregates a bundle of dispersing connected Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) in the electricity power market operations to improve the grid flexibility, security and reduce environmental risks. As many countries in the world have started deploying VPP, the recent global market value for VPP amounted to USD 762 million in 2016 and the number is projected to reach USD 4,597 million by 2023.

UiTM embarks on a project of developing a VPP model by aggregating and optimising generation of its solar photovoltaic rooftops and large-scale solar plants, and energy consumption in campus buildings at different localities through demand response using artificial intelligence (AI). This project is funded by PETRONAS Research Sdn. Bhd. for the duration of one and half year. Nearly RM2.5 million has been allocated to materialise the idea involving researchers from UiTMโ€™s Solar Research Institute, College of Engineering and Institute for Big Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence.

โ€œ This project would be a great drive of low carbon energy and industrial revolution in the future decentralised renewable power landscape in Malaysia. Our unique AI-VPP framework includes formulating load and solar power generation forecasting models, energy management and trading algorithm, and integrating and optimising the generation and consumption in a cloud-based and virtual environment to minimise the energy use and cost, as well as carbon footprint,โ€- Assoc. This project is in line with United Nationโ€™s Sustainable Development Goals and the university strategic plan, towards becoming a globally renowned university by 2025.
